Cheapest VPS for India in 2026: prices verified, latency measured

Published 2026-10-09

TESTED — measured, not copied from pricing pages

Every “cheapest VPS” listicle has two problems: prices from 2023, and zero awareness that India-region plans often differ from the advertised ones. We verified every price on official pages this week and measured latency from an actual Indian connection.

The verdict table

Provider Cheapest real plan Specs India region? The catch
Vultr $3.50/mo 1 vCPU, 512 MB, 10 GB Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi The advertised $2.50 plan is IPv6-only
DigitalOcean $4.00/mo 1 vCPU, 512 MB, 10 GB Bangalore Smallest size not always deployable in BLR
Linode (Akamai) $5.00/mo 1 vCPU, 1 GB, 25 GB Mumbai + Chennai None significant — our pick
AWS Lightsail $5.00/mo 2 vCPU, 512 MB, 20 GB Mumbai Mumbai bundles get HALF the bandwidth (0.5 TB)
Hostinger “$6.49/mo” 1 vCPU, 4 GB, 50 GB India DC Requires 24-month prepay (~$156 upfront); renews at $11.99
Hetzner €5.99/mo 2 vCPU, 4 GB, 40 GB No India Best specs-per-euro in existence, but EU-only pricing; Singapore costs ~25% more with less bandwidth

Prices verified 2026-10-09 against official pricing pages.

Latency from India (measured, not estimated)

Ping from an Indian broadband connection (median of 5):

Target Latency
Vultr Mumbai 3.6 ms
Linode Mumbai 3.6 ms
DigitalOcean Bangalore 17 ms
DigitalOcean Singapore 56 ms
Vultr Singapore 98 ms
Hetzner Germany 140-215 ms

The headline: Mumbai regions are effectively LAN-speed for Indian users. Singapore costs you ~50-100 ms on every round trip, and Europe 150-215 ms. For an SSH session that’s annoyance; for a database your app queries 20 times per page, it’s the difference between snappy and sluggish.

The India-specific traps nobody mentions

  1. AWS Lightsail halves Mumbai bandwidth. The $5 bundle advertises 1 TB transfer — the pricing page fine print: Mumbai bundles include half. Same price, half the allowance.
  2. Vultr’s famous $2.50 VPS has no IPv4. Most Indian ISPs can’t even reach it (we documented the same IPv6 problem with Supabase). The real entry price is $3.50.
  3. Hostinger’s price is a prepayment, not a price. “$6.49/month” means ₹13,000+ upfront for 24 months, renewing at nearly double. Compare honestly: it’s a $12 VPS with a discount coupon.
  4. Hetzner’s legendary value doesn’t reach India. The €5.99 CX23 (2 vCPU/4 GB!) is Germany/Finland only. Their Singapore site costs more, offers fewer plan types, caps bandwidth lower — and still sits 98+ ms away.

Recommendations by use case

Hosting for Indian users (API, app backend, anything latency-sensitive): Linode Nanode, $5/mo, Mumbai. Double the RAM of the $4-and-under options, full 1 TB transfer (vs Lightsail Mumbai’s 0.5 TB), 3.6 ms measured latency, no fine-print traps. Chennai as a second AZ option is a bonus nobody else has.

Absolute lowest cost with India region: Vultr $3.50 Mumbai — if 512 MB is enough (Vaultwarden runs in 14 MB; Uptime Kuma in ~150 MB; both fit together with room to spare).

Big workloads where latency doesn’t matter (batch jobs, backups, media processing for yourself): Hetzner Germany. 2 vCPU/4 GB/20 TB for €5.99 is unmatched — just don’t serve Indian users from it.

Before paying anything: the Oracle Always Free VM gives 2 OCPU/12 GB at ₹0 with Mumbai/Hyderabad regions. Its catches (card verification, idle reclaim, capacity hunting) are documented here — but for self-hosting and side projects it beats every paid option in this list on raw specs.

The honest math for a side project

A $5/month VPS is ₹5,000/year. What you get over free tiers: no sleep, no pause, no reclaim, no CU-hour budget — every free tier’s interruption mechanics, gone. When your project has even one real user, that trade is usually worth it. Until then, free tiers + the Oracle VM cover a lot of ground.

Latency measured 2026-10-09 from Indian broadband (methodology: ICMP + TCP connect medians, 5 runs). Prices from official pricing pages the same day — they’ll drift, and our tracked pages catch the free-tier side of that drift automatically.
