Gotchas that bite people
On a Global database every write bills once per region — one read replica doubles your write command count against the 500K budget
Adding a credit card immediately converts the database to pay-as-you-go — the free allowance does NOT carry over as a free base
Pay-as-you-go has no cost ceiling by default — set the budget cap feature or a traffic spike becomes a bill
Old Pro 2K/10K plans are deprecated — tutorials referencing them are stale
Notes for developers in India
AWS Mumbai (ap-south-1) is an officially listed region for primaries/replicas. Whether free-plan primaries can select Mumbai is unverified — check at creation.
